Humbervale United Church History
Humbervale United Church started as a Methodist preaching point and became a congregation within The United Church of Canada upon church union in 1925.
Our earliest beginnings were with mid-week worship services and a Sunday School in various homes. The first church building opened on May 11, 1893, located at Eden Bridge on Scarlett Road just south of Eglinton Avenue.
It continued as a preaching point along with several other churches in the area (Mimico, Lambton, Tomlinson’s, and New Toronto) until 1954 when it became a separate charge with Rev. W. Cairns Conning as the first minister. He served until his death in 1957.
The devastation of Hurricane Hazel in October 1954 left the site badly eroded. When a new church was envisioned to meet the needs of suburban growth, the present site was acquired. A portable was built on the site and an inaugural service was held in April 1959. The present building was finished and officially opened for services on January 19, 1964.
With a long history of Christian service behind it, the congregation at Humbervale continues to serve the community.
